EMDR therapy in Adelaide, at a pace that feels safe for you.
Answer a few short questions to see whether an EMDR assessment is a good next step. It takes about two minutes.
Bozena Chambers is a Registered EMDR Therapist and Mental Health Clinician with more than 25 years of trauma-informed practice. Sessions are available in person at Mile End or by video, and Medicare rebates may be available with a GP referral.
When something from the past still feels present
EMDR is an evidence-based therapy most widely known for treating trauma.
Sometimes an experience stays with us long after it's over. It can show up as anxiety, panic, poor sleep, feeling on edge, or a sense that you're not quite yourself. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) aims to reduce the emotional intensity, physical reactions and unhelpful beliefs connected to distressing memories. It doesn't erase memories. It aims to help them feel less overwhelming to hold.
Everyone's experience is different, and your initial assessment is where you and Bozena work out whether EMDR is the right fit.
EMDR may also be used alongside treatment for OCD, eating disorders and substance use. Suitability is discussed at assessment.
A structured approach, guided every step of the way
EMDR follows an 8-phase framework that looks at past experiences, present triggers and future coping.
When a distressing experience isn't fully processed, it can stay "stuck", bringing up the same feelings and reactions long after the event. EMDR is based on the understanding that the mind can heal from psychological injury, much like the body heals from a physical one. Using guided bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, EMDR aims to help the brain's natural processing system do its work.
